Scholar Practitioner Accomplishments
2019 - Doctoral Dissertation Approved & Final Oral Review Completed
Conducted a case study to describe the phenomenon of life coaching client abuse that occurred during months of atypical coaching. Atypical coaching is characterized by (1) focus upon the past rather than the present and future; (2) static techniques versus dynamic coaching acumen and skill; (3) inordinate power imbalance; (4) emphasis upon clients’ weaknesses instead of strengths; (5) fixation upon clients’ painful experiences and (6) client emotional abuse.
Client preparedness, acquisition of coaching knowledge, increased mindfulness, and applied due diligence during the coach selection process are recommended for clients who wish to identify and avoid atypical coaching. In addition, coached client participation best practices emerged that promote client safety and enhance coaching value. The findings and conclusions are important because the coaching industry is entirely self-regulated. Coaching clients are solely responsible for protecting their rights as consumers to ensure their personal safety and financial interests are protected.
Typically, coaches and clients experience shared accountability, benefits, and mutual success. Although the coaching industry is relatively new, accreditation standards have been established by coach practitioners and recognized industry institutions. Atypical coaching can threaten client safety when coaches practice methods outside of established coaching accreditation standards and norms. The legitimacy of the coaching industry is challenged to emerge from the current state of novelty, rapid growth, and wide range of services that fall under the broad category of coaching.
2018 - Somatics, Phenomenology, and Communicative Leadership concentration
Completed the concentration and earned the credential. She produced a final essay about her own experiences with a political tweet than went viral called, A Case Study: Coordinated Management of Meaning and Twitter: Cacophony of Moral Conflict. See the Blog page to read the full paper.
2017 - Somatics, Phenomenology, and Communicative Leadership concentration
Participated in the Intensive on Somatics at La Casa de Maria May 1-3- 2017. As a collective of enlightened scholars we explored the seven chakras, Kundalini Yoga, Somatic Dance, Meditation, Dance and Song, Tibetian Bowls, and Drumming circles. We enjoyed lectures from organizational leaders regarding somatic practice in the workplace.
2016 - Mindfulness in the Workplace
Launched an initiative within my team to introduce and integrate mindfulness and Gentle Somatic Yoga for desk-workers as part of our meeting practice. The initiative is being rolled out over the summer. Short mindfulness and somatic yoga breaks have been added to the agenda of regular meetings where the team reviews intensive programs over 4 hour periods. The intention for the mindfulness breaks is to increase meeting participant awareness and engagement due to the length of the meetings. The GSY for desk-worker practice is based upon the work of James Knight.
